Jo was born Wanda Jo Fenner on July 20, 1935, in Sinton, Tx, and passed away on October 1, 2026, in Arlington, Texas, surrounded by her family.
Although born into tough historical times, she was raised in an idyllic situation in small-town Texas and thrived. She graduated from TCU with a degree in elementary education. It was there she met her future husband, Joe Brophey; they married in 1956. Together, they raised two boys, Mike and Tom, primarily in Houston, Texas.
Jo had a deep faith in her relationship with Jesus Christ. She was involved in several different churches and church ministries over the years, ranging from teaching Sunday School to leading women’s ministries and coordinating baptisms for new believers. She was primarily a stay-at-home mom, but did use her education degree in the San Antonio, Houston, and Arlington ISDs.
She had many hobbies and interests, but most of all, she loved reading. She had a voracious appetite and the ability to consume books in a short period of time, always looking for her next read. She also enjoyed playing bridge and a variety of other card games, where her competitive spirit was always on full display.
Perhaps Jo’s greatest title and position in life was being MeMe to six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, whom she loved and adored until the end of her life and will be greatly missed by all of them.
Jo had many meaningful friendships throughout her life, but none more special than those from her time at Martin High School, Town Village Crossing, and Emerson independent living retirement centers. She held all those friends near and dear in her heart.
Jo is survived by her sons, Michael Brophey, MD, and wife Liz; Tom Brophey; and sister Barbara Humes.
Grandchildren: Meghan, Sydney Stark (Kyle), Patrick (Caitlin), Samantha Quintana (Josh), Rebecca Brophey, and Jonathan Brophey.
Great-grandchildren: Lindsey, Emery, Olive Stark, Adeline, and Elsie Brophey, Josie Quintana.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Brophey; parents, Babe & Anna Fenner; as well as her daughter-in-law, Natalie Brophey.
Visitation will be held on October 9, 6–8 p.m., at Wade Family Funeral Home, and a memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on October 10 at Wade Funeral Home as well. A private burial will be held at a later date for the family.
