R.L. "Bob" Schimmel, 92, of Dalworthington Gardens, TX died peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 8, 2025. Bob was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma on December 16, 1932 to Claude and Myrtle Mae Schimmel who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, Patrick Schimmel and his brother, Lester Schimmel.
The Schimmel family moved to Fort Worth when Bob was a child. He lived the rest of his life in the Arlington area.
Bob proudly served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean conflict. After returning from the military he attended TCU and the University of North Texas. He was a member of the "Geezles" at UNT, a fraternity for athletes. He made many important lifelong Geezle friendships and was one of the last surviving members.
Bob had several great loves in his life. His first love was the game of baseball. As a young boy he played for the River Oaks Indians. He later played for TCU and North Texas. Once he was no longer able to play baseball his passion turned to golf. He was an avid golfer, especially in retirement. He loved to marshal at Riverside Golf Club and he enjoyed traveling to play with family and friends. He shot his only hole in one in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Over the past couple of years as health issues curtailed his golf game he enjoyed his nightly cigar with his neighbor and dear friend, Scott Crosier.
Bob's greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Margaret "Sue" Schimmel and his blended family, his children Michael Schimmel (Linda) of Lutz, FL, Richard Schimmel (Beth) of Garland, Karen Carpenter of South Padre Island, Jana Collins of Dalworthington Gardens, Lisa Lynch of Las Colinas and Cary Lynch of Houston; his grandchildren Alex Bahnsen (Andrew), Becca Duckett (Brad), Morgan Ruiz (Kevin), Madison Schimmel, Megan Schimmel, Madelyn Schimmel, Susana Nichols (Austin), Eric Baker (Shonda), Justin Baker (Melody), Cassie Zaccardo (Josh) and Beth Nulsen (Ryan); and 18 great grandchildren. Bob is also survived by sisters-in-law Dolleta Schimmel and Millie Robards and nephew Ty Schimmel.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Wade Funeral Home, 4140 West Pioneer Parkway, Arlington, TX with visitation on Wednesday, August 13th from 6-8 pm and funeral service on Thursday, August 14th at 2:00 pm with Scott Crosier and Austin Nichols officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery with military honors.
