Rita Jo Thornton

Rita Jo Thornton, a beloved mother, cherished family member, and dear friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday August 30th, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love, memories, and moments that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

To me, Rita was more than my mother—she was my greatest supporter Her love shaped my life in countless ways. She had a special way of making people feel cared for, whether through her words, her kindness, her laughter, or simply by being there when she was needed most.

Rita will be remembered for her personality. Favorite hobbies were cooking, sewing and watching John Wayne movies. The memories we shared with her are gifts that we will carry with us always.

Preceded in death by her parents, Byron Bartee Thornton and Allie Jay Foy Thornton, and son Nicholas Wayne Evans, she is survived by her daughter Jo Allison Evans Gittiban, and her dearest husband Nasser Gittiban, and her granddaughter Allison Maryam Gittiban Thomas whom she cherished and adored always and her loving husband Grady Ray Thomas as well as many Nieces and loved friends who will deeply miss her.

Though the emptiness left by her passing is difficult to put into words, so is the gratitude for having had her in our lives. A mother's love never truly leaves us. Rita's love will continue through the people she touched, the lessons she taught, and the memories she gave us.

Rest peacefully, Mom. You were loved more than words can say, and you will be missed every day.
