Mary Cathleen “Cathy” Frederick, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
Cathy was born on January 20, 1944, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Rosemary and Jim Powers as the eldest of 8 siblings. In 1962, she married the love of her life, Gerald Frederick. Together, they had 58 years of marriage that included 5 children, 1 daughter and 4 sons.
Cathy was the Mom of Moms, having helped raise her younger siblings as she was growing up and then raising her own children. Cathy was a very spiritual person and grounded in her rich heritage as a proud Choctaw Native American. She was an avid gardener, bird enthusiast, and could be found in her veranda most mornings before the sun came up. She loved traveling to Sulphur, Oklahoma and taking her grandchildren on beach trips to Port Aransas, every summer. She was an accomplished artist, seamstress, and loved shopping. She leaves behind many cherished oil paintings with family and friends. She had a beautiful singing voice and was known for serenading her children as an alternative to an alarm clock. The house was filled with music from a variety of albums at any time, without need for an occasion. While her love of music was broad, Neil Diamond was usually playing, as he was her favorite. Cathy was an excellent cook, having crafted her ability out of necessity, hosted countless extended family holiday gatherings and dinner parties with friends, as well as always being ready to whip a meal or snack together for her children’s friends.
With respect to work, Cathy would have at least one home project in the works at any given time. She was quick to pick up a paint brush, put up wallpaper, and one time was found in the attic blowing in insulation. She was able to parlay her love of baseball into a job, having worked for the Texas Rangers Baseball Club in various capacities. This included several roles in guest services as well as a couple of years managing fan mail for high-profile players. Cathy was also a school volunteer and substitute teacher.
Cathy is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, infant son, and her husband Gerald. She is survived by her 4 children, Bryan (Lisa), Claire (Jeff), Matthew (Heather), Andrew (Rosie), and her 6 grandchildren: Jonathon, Jennifer, Melanie, Michael, Addie and Brooke.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in Cathy’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
