John Skidmore, 98, passed away on January 13, 2026, in Pantego, Texas. He was born on June 18, 1927, in Grapeland, Texas, where he was raised and graduated from Grapeland High School.
Following high school, John proudly joined the U.S. Navy, beginning a lifetime of service, discipline, and patriotism that shaped who he was. He later attended Tarleton State College in Stephenville, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Jean. Their love story was one of devotion and anticipation-so much so that they had a "secret" wedding before later celebrating publicly. They simply could not wait to be united in marriage.
John continued his education and ultimately graduated from Texas A&M University. After college, he began a successful career with Hicks Mobile Homes, where he quickly distinguished himself as an exceptional salesman. Never one to shy away from hard work or ambition, John later branched out on his own and owned multiple companies in the mobile home industry. He was self-made, driven, and deeply believed that you should work hard for what you have-values rooted in his upbringing on a farm, where he learned responsibility early, milking cows before heading off to school.
A man of deep faith and steady character, John was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Arlington, Texas, for 75 years. His faith was not just something he professed-it was something he lived. John was known for his strong morals, his honesty, and his commitment to serving others. He visited friends in nursing homes and hospitals, cared about people in a sincere and lasting way, and continually put others ahead of himself.
John was a true lover of life and community. He was actively involved in the Arlington Seniors Golf Club, where he treasured his friendships, served as President, and earned the affectionate nickname "Honest John." He loved golf, not only for the game but for the camaraderie it brought him.
John also had a passion for flying. After earning his pilot's license, he began by renting planes and later purchased his own 180 Cessna high-wing aircraft. His family was able to fly with him through the years, and they will cherish those memories always. He also loved to travel-visiting every state except two-and enjoyed traveling by RV, making the most of the open road and the adventure it offered.
John's mind remained remarkably sharp all the way to the end. His family often marveled at his memory-he never forgot a birthday and could recall details with ease. He was a proud Texas A&M supporter, a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, and a football enthusiast who could talk statistics, teams, and history with anyone who would listen. He was also known as a sharp dresser-humble, simple, and dignified-often with a favorite watch on his wrist. Even as technology changed, John stayed true to his ways: he never used a GPS and preferred his atlas, confidently knowing every route, every street, and every turn.
Above all, John loved his family. He often reminded them, "Family is important," encouraging them to work hard and love one another well. Thanksgiving and Christmas were especially meaningful to him because they brought everyone together. He was thoughtful, faithful, and made sure the people in his life never doubted his love for them.
John was preceded in death by his father, Arwine Hickey Skidmore; his mother, Cora Bell Skidmore; his sisters, Gwendolyn Skidmore Walton and Ouita Skidmore O'Dell; his son, Steven Clayton Skidmore; his first wife, Jean Mason Skidmore; his second wife, Rosemary Cox; and his grandson, Jacob Clayton Skidmore.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Skidmore; his grandchildren, Bradley Skidmore, Ryan Skidmore, and Amanda Delarosa; his great-grandchildren, Adriana, Brenna, Kylie, Ty, John, Evan, and Maryela; and his great-great-grandson, Amari.
