John Curtiss Shuttee

John Curtiss Shuttee, born in Austin on October 1st, 1958, to Richard “Dick” Shuttee and Elaine Hayes, passed away on April 21st, 2026, at the age of 67 after battling three years with ALS.

John was a great communicator, generous and warm, easy with a laugh and quick to find your funny bone. He was an avid movie buff, a diehard Cowboys fan and a lover of comedy in all forms. He held a BA from Stephen F. Austin in Finance and earned an MBA from University of Wyoming. John was a fount of knowledge and trivia, could easily coin a phrase and always had time for friends in need or to raise the spirits of his family with the perfect impression or silly joke.

John was the ultimate family man, leaving behind a devoted family dedicated to carrying on his legacy: Lisa Shuttee, his wife of nearly 38 years, son Vic Shuttee, (Spouse; Caitlin Turnage) and daughter Gabrielle Shuttee (Spouse: Zachary Neiger), sister Anne Shuttee, step-sister Joanne Kenney Parker (Spouse: Steve Parker), and step-brother Bobby Kenney (Spouse: Amy Haynes-Tice). John also had one grandson, Cosmo Shuttee, born March 24th, 2025.

John was preceded by both his parents, Richard Shuttee and Elaine Hayes, and his stepfather, Joseph Kenney.

John was a proud veteran of the Gulf War, serving as a member of the United States Air Force, where he met his wife Lisa, also a Captain and social worker. Together, they shared incredible adventures traveling through Europe and sampling the best food and wine the world had to offer. He served four years as a nuclear ICBM launch officer and claimed that one of his greatest accomplishments while stationed in Saudi Arabia was being entrusted to manage all monies distributed by the Air Force in the Persian Gulf Region, having four finance offices in three countries. He even petitioned Congress to ensure a treaty was enforced with the country of Kuwait.

After returning to America, he settled in Houston and joined the Oil and Gas Industry, working as a financial analyst for Credit Lyonnaise, writing ISDA contracts for El Paso Corp and finally, working as a Credit Manager for 18 years with Total SA (the national French Oil Company) until his retirement in 2020.

John’s passing comes after a difficult diagnosis with ALS. Every step of the way, John showed bravery and humility in the face of this terminal diagnosis. While his body deteriorated, his mind remained sharp and connected, and his soul remained a devoted servant of God. He was blessed to meet his only grandson, Cosmo Brooks Shuttee in March 2025 and see his only daughter get married only a month before his passing. He even danced with her to his favorite Beatles song. His life was a blessing, and his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those friends and family who loved him so.

He wanted to return to Arlington after his passing, a city which raised him and remains home to so many of his life-long friends who survive him and supported him during this challenging time, including attending the ALS walk as part of Team 54 for John, a number selected to honor his long-time jersey number from his days playing football.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 7th at 10 am at Wade Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 11:30am at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at 2pm with Airforce funeral honors. The family appreciates that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the ALS Association to help fight this disease.
