John Steven Self, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, teacher, and friend, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on August 23, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, to Horace and Carolyn Self.
John was a dedicated and hardworking man who built a meaningful career through his skills, knowledge, and commitment to others. He became a Master Plumber and was HVAC certified, and he also found fulfillment in teaching and sharing his knowledge and experience with others. His professional accomplishments reflected his strong work ethic and his desire to help those around him succeed.
John proudly served his country and was a veteran of the United States military. His service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His dedication to his country was an important part of the life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind.
Above all, John treasured his family. He shared his life with his beloved wife, Jeanne Self, and took great pride in his children, Maggie (Nic) Jones, James (Renee) Self, and Michael Self. He was a loving grandfather to Taylor, Ashley, Rebecca, Caitlyn, Justin, Emily, and Nathaniel, and a proud great-grandfather to Analeigha, EJ, Avery, and his numerous other great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister, Dana Dillenberg, along with extended family and many friends who will cherish his memory.
John found simple joy in the things that mattered most. He loved fishing, spending time outdoors, and, most importantly, being with his family. The time he shared with those he loved created memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
John will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, dedication to his family and country, willingness to teach others, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on through his family, the lessons he shared, and the many lives he touched throughout his years.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
