Jerry Burgess, 82, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026 at his home in Grand Prairie, Texas surrounded by his family, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the Quarter Horse racing industry as a champion jockey, respected racing official, and true gentleman.

Born in Heavener, OK on December 26, 1943 to Melvin and Myra Burgess. Jerry developed a love for horses at an early age and he was encouraged by his father Melvin to begin riding match races on local bush tracks, displaying the determination and natural talent that would shape an extraordinary career in horse racing.

Jerry rose through the ranks to become one of the nation’s premier Quarter Horse jockeys. He competed successfully at racetracks throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, California, Texas and South Dakota, earning the respect of horsemen everywhere he rode. In 1966, he became the nation’s leading Quarter Horse jockey with 117 official AQHA victories, following a runner-up finish in the national standings the previous year. Throughout his riding career, he partnered with many outstanding horses, including the celebrated Cinder Leo, Bugs Alive in 75, Mighty Deck Three, Chicory Moon, Top Bug, Miss Squaw Hand, and Dash for Cash. He was admired for his skill, courage, and sportsmanship.

After retiring from riding, Jerry put his college degree to work serving the sport he loved as a racing official in Texas, New Mexico, Florida, and Nebraska. His fairness, integrity, and sound judgment earned him the admiration of owners, trainers, jockeys, and racing officials across the country. In 2016 he was awarded the Pete Pederson Award for Meritorious Service to the North American Horse Racing Industry as a Racing Steward since 1988, he was also honored by being inducted into the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Hall of Fame and the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame. Whether in the saddle or the stewards’ stand, Jerry’s unwavering commitment to honesty and the welfare of the sport made him a trusted and respected figure.

Beyond his accomplishments on the racetrack, Jerry was known for his kindness, humility, and generous spirit. He was a mentor to countless young riders and horsemen, always willing to share his experience and encourage others. His warm smile, steady character, and genuine love for people left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jerry’s contributions to Quarter Horse racing spanned decades, and his influence will continue to be felt for generations. While his achievements are etched in racing history, those who knew him best will remember him most for the character he displayed every day—a devoted family man, loyal friend, consummate horseman, and true gentleman.

Jerry Burgess will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire horse racing community. His legacy of excellence, integrity, and compassion will endure in the hearts of all whose lives he touched.

Survivors include his wife Georgia, son Mike Burgess and wife Charlotte, daughter Shaena Carter and husband GR, daughter Alana Martin, granddaughter Katelynn Kester, his sister Onetta Flynn and husband Thurman, and his two beloved Jack Russell terriers Rascal and Bonnie.

Funeral arrangements and a celebration of Jerry’s life will be announced by the family.
