Ida Caroline Smith

Ida Caroline Smith was born on January 12, 1930 in Slippery Rock, PA to William and Caroline Smith. She received her Registered Nursing Degree from Meadville City Hospital, School of Nursing in Meadville, PA in 1951.

Ida met George Duane Smith during her nursing school years and they were married on March 31, 1951. They were married for 68 years, 8 months before he passed away on December 2, 2019.

Starting in 1953, Ida raised and nurtured her 6 children. They all, in turn, were blessed to take care of her in her final years and fulfilled her wish to live in her house until she peacefully slipped into eternity with our Lord Jesus Christ on August 16, 2025.

When the family moved to Texas, in August, 1969, she resumed her nursing career working at Arlington Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1992. Ida met many lifelong and dear friends while she was at AMH; as well as, when she was an active member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. She enjoyed being a member of the Women’s Guild, the Garden Club, the Leisure Club, and she served as Secretary to the Serra Club. She also lovingly served as a member of the Auxiliary to the Carmelite Nuns, and was a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Duane and Ida were fortunate to enjoy many years of amazing travels. They saw great sites across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and the Holy Land. Her favorite trip was the 3 months they spent in New Zealand after they retired.

Ida is preceded in death by her parents, three of her four siblings, and her husband, Duane. She is survived by her brother, Zeno Smith of PA, her six children: Debbie Odell (Chris) of Arlington, David Smith of Morgan, TX, Doug Smith (Diana) of Arlington, Diane Tejeda (Pedro) of Arlington, Danny Smith (Susan) of Crowley, TX, Denise Gentile (Jim) of Arlington.

13 Grandchildren: Dannette Odell Mayombola (Paul) Marcella Odell Martin (Justin), David Nelson (Jenna), Christina Odell Bertrand (Jacob), Eric Smith (Jennifer), Aaron Smith (Keri), Matteo Smith, Ronnie Jones (Shari), Jeremy Smith (Michelle), Becki Olsen (Adam), Connor Smith, Kassidy Johnson (Matthew), and Mindy Gentile (Cody Gift).

19 Great-Grandchildren: Angelina Jones Steger (Jagger), Mykl, Zachary, Jaymie and Jayden Nelson, Kharis and Hanna Mayombola, Blayze and Phoenyx Olsen, Nicole Smith, Madeline and Makenna Martin, Noah and Olivia Smith, Skyler Gentile, Jacqueline Gift, Henry and Mila Bertrand. Baby Bertrand is due in early 2026, and 1 Great-Great Grandchild: Aleia Steger.
