George Earl Ice, known affectionately to his Oregon friends and family as "Mike," passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy defined by hard work, a vibrant athletic spirit, and a genuine love for people.
Early Life and Education
Born in Medford, Oregon, to George Lyman and Ruth Barnhart Ice, George grew up alongside his older sister, Dorothy. He was an active youth, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16 and serving as the Vice President of his senior class. A standout athlete, he played football and basketball, though baseball was his true passion. He was famously—and jokingly—proud of the trophy he earned for "sliding," a highlight of his baseball days that he cherished.
George pursued higher education at the University of Oregon, working construction during the summers to self-fund his studies. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree, he entered dental school. However, his path shifted significantly following a tragic automobile accident that left him in a coma and forced him to leave his studies.
Adventures in Alaska
George moved to Alaska and built a successful career as an Operating Engineer with Union 302. It was in Fairbanks, through a chance meeting at a phone booth, that he met the love of his life, Barbara. He endearingly nicknamed her "Sparky Lou" because she was so vivacious and hailed from Louisville, Kentucky. They married in the summer of 1978 and spent many happy decades together. They were pillars of their community, forming a close-knit circle of friends who became like family while exploring the wilderness through hiking, fishing, and cross-country skiing. They were also avid supporters of local sports and traveled to Hawaii many times to escape the cold winters.
Texas Years and Final Farewell
George and Barbara relocated to Arlington, Texas, for health reasons. For over a decade, George had lived with Alzheimer’s disease, maintaining a firm resolve not to let it impact his quality of life. George was a man who truly "never met a stranger" and loved to talk to people. He was a fixture in his neighborhood, so friendly that even the staff at the local Kroger missed his presence and asked about him. Following a battle with pneumonia brought on by the effects of his long-term illness, George passed away peacefully.
Family
George is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Keeling Ice; his sister, Dorothy Ice Ferrell; and his sister-in-law, Patricia Elaine Norcross . He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and a large extended family who will miss him dearly.
