Garnet Eugene “Gene” Prater, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 31, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hominy, Oklahoma, on September 30, 1936, Gene was the son of the late Garnet and Lucy Prater. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Vanita McElhanon and JoAnn Weaver. In 1952, the family moved to Arlington, where Gene attended the “old” Arlington High School, graduating in 1954. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves, proudly serving for eight years.

At the age of 21, Gene became the owner and operator of Prater’s Texaco Service Station, which he successfully ran for six years while attending Arlington State College. He initially pursued a degree in Dentistry before beginning a long and successful career with Bell Helicopter in 1962. His dedication and strong work ethic spanned nearly three decades with the company.

In retirement, Gene and his beloved wife, Frankie “Shug,” of nearly 68 years, enjoyed many wonderful adventures traveling in their motorhome and spending cherished time with family. Gene’s greatest joy was being surrounded by his loved ones: his three children—Rodney, Paige, and Frank—and their spouses, Kourtney, John, and Megann; his seven grandsons, A.J., Cameron, Zack, Kelley, Lunden, Kyce, and Nathan; his granddaughter, Avery; and his granddaughter-in-law, Rita.

Gene’s legacy of storytelling, love, hard work, and integrity will live on in all who were blessed to know him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to AlevCare Hospice for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity in Gene’s memory.
