Garner Gustin "Gus" Wallgren

Garner Gustin “Gus” Wallgren, 86, of Burleson, Texas, passed away on November 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Gus was born on December 26, 1938, on a small family farm near Stratford, Oklahoma. He graduated as valedictorian from Stratford High School in 1957 and received a baseball scholarship to Oklahoma State, then transferred to East Central Oklahoma, where he graduated.

After college, he received his draft notice, but he applied and was accepted into the United States Air Force Officer Training School in San Antonio in March 1962. He served in many missions around the world, including Vietnam from 1962 to 1968, reaching the rank of Captain. He was a navigator on a C-130. Aircraft with the MATS (MAC) 41st Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base. After his service, he eventually settled his family in Garland, Texas, in 1969.

Gus went on to work for Kimberly-Clark and later served as Vice President of Sales at Morrison Milling Company, where he dedicated 30 years. He was known as a hard worker and led by example.

In the 1970s, Gus dedicated himself to the local North Garland Little League baseball program at Holford Park, where he coached and served on the board, drawing from his humble beginnings. He believed every child deserved a chance to play, regardless of whether they could afford a glove, bat, or league fees. He helped raise funds through sponsorships and candy sales to ensure kids could participate in baseball. That spirit of generosity remained a fundamental part of his life.

Gus loved going to Winstar Casino, listening to Texas Rangers baseball, and being a loyal Oklahoma Sooners football supporter. He enjoyed listening to Willie and Merle, spending warm days outside, and simply being with the people he loved. For many years, he owned and raised Thoroughbred horses. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he dedicated himself entirely to them and his family. He was funny, kind, and always quick to say, “If you need anything, call me,” and he truly meant it.

When times were tough, Gus leaned in instead of pulling away. He was the rock his family depended on, providing steady support, encouragement, and calm during the storm. Gus’s life was guided by love, duty, and quiet strength. His example will continue to influence the lives of those he touched.

Gus is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joy Wallgren; his children, Robert Wallgren of Burleson, Texas, Jim and his wife Janet Wallgren of Driftwood, Texas, and Mendy and her husband Eddie Webster of Joshua, Texas; and his cherished grandchildren, Ethan, John, Aubrey, and Ashlee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Alice Wallgren, and his siblings Glen, Virgil, Alice, and Louis.
