Fred Cook Jr.

May 3, 1934 — April 28, 2025

Arlington

Fred Cook passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Fred moved to Arlington at a young age and proudly called it home for the rest of his life. He lived with a sense of joy, humility, and an unwavering love for his family, friends, and community.

A proud graduate of Arlington High School, Fred was a natural athlete and leader. He served as captain of the 1951 State Championship football team and went on to play college football at Arlington State College. His competitive spirit and dedication to teamwork left a lasting impact on those who played alongside him.

Fred met the love of his life, Sandra, in grade school. Their story blossomed into a lifelong partnership, beginning when Sandra was a senior at Arlington High and Fred was attending college. They were married on November 30, 1955, and shared a remarkable love story spanning nearly 70 years.

Fred’s professional career took him from the oilfields of West Texas to Alaska, and eventually to Aberdeen, Scotland, where he and Sandra lived for five years. As a Safety Director for Sedco Drilling Company, Fred traveled extensively and was deeply committed to his work. He loved the oilfield industry and found purpose in every role he held.

Fred had a magnetic personality—easygoing, outgoing, and always ready with a joke. He was the kind of man who never met a stranger and always found the bright side of things. He loved people and made a lasting impression everywhere he went.

In his free time, Fred enjoyed playing golf, bird hunting—especially dove hunting—and spending time outdoors. A fan of country legends like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson, he also had a deep appreciation for jazz music. His favorite meal was a classic steak and baked potato, though Tex-Mex held a special place in his heart.

Fred treasured family holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, and especially loved the 4th of July. One of the family’s fondest memories was their annual picnic at Meadowbrook Park, where Fred would rise early—always up by 5 a.m.—to cook breakfast for everyone before a morning of golf and swimming.

Fred had a love for westerns and cowboy life, even buying horses for his children. He created many treasured memories with his family, including the time he and his daughter Jennifer rode together in the Arlington 4th of July Parade on horseback. He even tried his hand at gardening alongside his good friend, Tom Cravens.

Fred was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his legacy is best seen in the values he passed on. As his son Sam shared, Fred taught him how to throw a baseball, how to drive, the value of hard work, and the difference between right and wrong. Most of all, he was always there.

Fred and Sandra were longtime members of First Presbyterian Church in Arlington, where they shared their faith and community for many years.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra Cook; son, Sam Cook and wife Gail; daughter, Jennifer Cook; grandchildren, Luci Holcomb and husband Michael, Clint Cook and wife Bridget, and Allison Jank and husband Tristen.
