Evelyn Jolene Mason Cash passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the age of 96, even though one doctor one time told her she'd live to see 100. She was known by everyone simply as Jo Cash, but to some legal entities she was Jolene Cash, Evelyn Jo Cash, and Evelyn Cash. Which, of course, is no headache at all.
She was born in Coffeyville, Kansas as the first of two girls on May 17, 1929, to Fred Mason and Leona Hobbs before the family moved to Houston, Texas. She and her sister, Virginia "Ginny Lou" Shytles were the stars of every photograph they were ever in.
Upon moving to Arlington, Jo attended and graduated from Arlington High School in 1948 where she met her sweetheart, Walter Cash. The two were married in 1950 - the bride wore a velvet suit of aquamarine.
Jo was the ultimate caregiver, always in charge. She was highly organized and ran her house like a well-oiled machine. The floors were always buffed, the surfaces immaculate, the family gatherings at the pool thoughtfully organized.
She loved playing cards, and somehow always won. Even until the end. Her smile was contagious and never fading. She took pride in her appearance, her hair was always perfectly laid - and she made sure to document, in writing, when she was unhappy with it (the perm of June 1988, for example).
Without a doubt she loved her family. It's unclear, however, if ever as much as she loved her turquoise 1987 Mercedes. A funny woman through and through who never once understood the power that holds, to be completely effortless in humor. A true conversationalist, able to feign interest in whatever you were going on about. But it wasn't ever faked, she was happy to be there, happy to be included, and really did want to hear about all of it. Always. This trait remained even when little else did.
She will forever be missed by her family and friends. Lucky for her and for us, she's the easiest person to tell stories about. An enigma to those who hear the stories and still to those who knew her their entire lives.
No service is scheduled. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to AlevCare Hospice or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Meadowbrook Memory Care for their love and attention during her time there, as well as the staff of AlevCare Hospice, who cared for Jo so well during the last year.
