Edgar “Doney” Bernard, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 64 years old.
Edgar will lie in repose from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Wade Family Funeral Home, Arlington, Texas. A homegoing service will be held at 10am on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Wade Family Funeral Home, Arlington, Texas. He will be laid to rest following the service at Arlington Cemetery.
Edgar was born on March 15, 1961, in Port Arthur, Texas to the late Bessie Mae (Gillins) Bernard and Edgar Bernard, Sr. He attended New Light Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. Edgar was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1979.
A longtime resident of Arlington, Texas, Edgar was known for his warm spirit, kind heart, and genuine compassion for others. He truly knew no stranger and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
He was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Rosa (Davis) Bernard, with whom he shared a life full of love, laughter, and devotion. He was a proud father to his daughter, Joanita Fontenot, and his son, Cory Bernard. Edgar found immense joy in his role as “PawPaw” to his grandchildren, Kaleb Jarmon, Kamylle Boyer, Jaxon Bernard, and Cadyn Bernard, as well as 15 bonus grandchildren who affectionately claimed him as their own.
Edgar dedicated 36 years of faithful and committed service to Packaging Corporation of America, where he worked as a Shift Supervisor. His strong work ethic and leadership were widely respected. He retired on July 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and professionalism. In recognition of his continued growth and excellence, Edgar earned a PCA School Course of Instruction Certificate from October 18–29, 2010.
Beyond work, Edgar was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, radiating enthusiasm and positivity with every game—and every play. His infectious smile, hearty laughter, and signature phrase, “gots to be more careful,” brought joy to everyone around him.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Edgar is also survived by his brother, William Bernard and wife Marva; sisters, Debra Doucet, Monarae Bernard, and Gert Bernard-Frank; sister-in-law, Shila Johnson; along with a host of extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his two brothers, Leroy Gregory Johnson and Clyde Joseph Johnson.
Edgar “Doney” Bernard, Jr. will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished by all who had the blessing of knowing him. His legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering generosity will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
