Earnest Eugene "Skip" Holley

Earnest Eugene "Skip" Holley, lovingly known to family and friends as Skip, passed away at the age of 89. Born on February 12, 1937, in Cumby, Texas, Skip was the son of Clyde and Lucile Holley, both of whom preceded him in death.

Raised on a small farm in Cumby, Texas, Skip's life was the embodiment of the American dream. Through determination, intelligence, and an unwavering work ethic, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the nation's most accomplished contract aeronautical engineers. He attended East Texas State University before embarking on an extraordinary career that spanned decades and took him to some of the most prestigious aerospace organizations in the country.

Throughout his career, Skip worked as a contract aeronautical engineer for numerous leading aerospace companies and government entities, including Boeing, NASA, Vought, and Bell Helicopter. His contributions to aviation and space exploration were nothing short of remarkable. He played a role in the design of every Boeing 7-series commercial aircraft from the 737 through the 777, the Bell V-22 Osprey, multiple Space Shuttle programs, and the stealth bomber. From a childhood spent on a small Texas farm to helping put astronauts into space, Skip's life was a true rags-to-riches story and a testament to what can be accomplished through hard work and perseverance.

Beyond his professional achievements, Skip was a man of simple pleasures and genuine character. He loved a perfectly cooked steak, a glass of cheap whiskey, and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. He was known as a great listener who possessed the spiritual gift of hospitality, making everyone who crossed his path feel welcome and valued. His kindness, humility, and tireless work ethic left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Skip also cherished his family's unique history and was proud to be the first cousin of legendary rock-and-roll pioneer Buddy Holly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Lucile Holley; his son, Stephen W. Holley; and his brothers, Valton Holley and David Holley.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Steve Hennessee, and his beloved granddaughters, Margaret Hennessee and Valerie Hennessee, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever treasure his memory.

A burial service will be held at a later date at the Holley Family Cemetery near Mt. Zion Church in Cumby, Texas.

Though Skip helped shape the future of aviation and space exploration, those who knew him best will remember him not only for the aircraft he helped design, but for the generosity he showed, the conversations he shared, and the example he set through a life defined by humility, resilience, and service to others. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
