Dwight Alan Schoneweis

Dwight Alan Schoneweis, 69, of Arlington, Texas, passed away at his home on July 18, 2026, one day before his 70th birthday.

Dwight was born on July 19, 1956, in Manhattan, Kansas, to the late Bernice (Brown) Schoneweis and David Schoneweis. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State University, laying the foundation for a distinguished career marked by innovation, precision, and dedication.

After more than 30 years in structural design engineering, Dwight retired from a career supporting some of the nation's most advanced military aircraft. His work contributed to numerous airframes, including the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and the F-35 Lightning II, among many others. He took great pride in the engineering challenges he solved and the lasting impact of his work.

Throughout his professional life, Dwight remained deeply committed to the engineering community. He was an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), where he also served as a past president and director. He was also a member of the American Association of Woodturners and the American Bladesmith Society, reflecting his lifelong passion for craftsmanship and continuous learning.

As a young man, Dwight achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, a distinction that reflected the values of service, leadership, and integrity that guided him throughout his life. Those same values carried into his years of volunteering as a Cub Scout leader and sports coach, where he generously shared his time, knowledge, and encouragement with young people in his community.

Outside of work, Dwight found joy in many pursuits. He loved soccer and enjoyed coaching athletes of all ages. He was a talented woodturner and knife maker, taking pride in creating beautiful and functional pieces with his own hands. He also enjoyed participating in bladesports, combining his craftsmanship with skill and friendly competition. Whether mentoring others, working in his shop, or cheering from the sidelines, Dwight approached every endeavor with enthusiasm, patience, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

On July 28, 1983, Dwight married the love of his life, Debra Jean Compton, in Wichita, Kansas. Together they built a life centered on love, family, friendship, and shared adventures. Their marriage of nearly 43 years was a testament to their enduring partnership and devotion to one another.

Dwight will be remembered for his brilliant mind, steady character, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to his family, profession, and community. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the people he mentored, and the work he accomplished throughout his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Jean (Compton) Schoneweis; sons, Dylan Schoneweis, and partner, Diane Shaw, and Trent Schoneweis, and wife, Chanelle; brother, Mark Schoneweis, and wife, Diana; sisters, Marlys Book, and husband, Chris, and Susan Schoneweis; grandchildren, Jaidan Bogan, Levi Bogan, Leila Schoneweis, Iván Schoneweis, Juniper Schoneweis; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dwight was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Pkwy., Arlington, Tx 76013. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Monday, July 27, 2026, at All Saints Lutheran Church, 4325 SW Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington, Tx 76017. Dwight will be laid to rest at Hawkins Cemetery in Arlington following the service.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to either the Scouting America Foundation or The American Bladesmith Society.
