Clarence James Bornsen, known to family and friends as Jim, passed away at his home on October 7, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born on May 17, 1944, in Grand Forks County, North Dakota, Jim was raised on the family farm near Inkster. His early years were shaped by farm life—growing crops, caring for livestock and developing a strong work ethic.
Jim attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, Minnesota, alongside his younger brother, where he split the year attending high school with working on the family farm. After graduating in 1962, he went on to earn degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering from North Dakota State University in 1967.
Jim’s career took him to Arlington, Texas, where he worked as a design engineer at Vought Aeronautics and LTV Aerospace. His engineering expertise contributed to the development of several significant aircraft, including the F-8 Crusader, A-7 Corsair II, S-3A Viking, and the Boeing 747. Later in life, Jim joined Mac Tools, managing a tool route and serving as a regional sales manager—a role that combined his technical knowledge with his love of travel and connecting with people.
Jim had a lifelong passion for building and fixing things—whether repairing cars, constructing model ships, or designing and flying model airplanes. He also loved fishing, golfing, and taking long road trips. He especially enjoyed exploring the Texas countryside, visiting small towns, and striking up conversations with new friends along the way.
In 1964, Jim married Karen Wolfgram in Niagara, North Dakota. Together they raised two children, Steven James Bornsen and Teresa Lynn Bornsen. Jim’s life was centered on his family and his faith. The family enjoyed camping, cross-country road trips, and a shared faith grounded in God’s love and grace.
Jim’s children and grandchildren were one of his greatest joys. He was a great listener, always genuinely interested in their lives, and proud of their accomplishments. He cherished his role as “Dad” and “Papa.”
Jim is survived by his children, Steven James Bornsen and Teresa Lynn Bornsen; his grandchildren, Brooke James Bornsen, Dylan Thomas Keefer-Bornsen, Chelsea Elena Harris, and Sophia Grace Harris; and his siblings, Jack (Sandy) Bornsen, Gary (Sue) Bornsen, Peggy (Glenn) Krueger, and Susan (Rand) Bornsen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Henry Bornsen and Edith Eleanor Rettke.
Jim believed deeply in the power of God’s love and grace. His faith provided him peace and strength which he shared with those around him. He leaves behind a legacy reflected in his children and grandchildren—compassion, practicality, optimism, and love for others. We are blessed to have had him in our lives as a father, grandfather, and friend.
We take comfort in knowing that Jim is now at peace, resting in the arms of his Savior. His example of love, faith, and joy will continue to inspire all who carry his memory.
