Charles Edwards Mahomes, 70, of Grand Prairie, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital. Born on June 29, 1954, in Dallas, Texas, Charles was the beloved son of Jim Mahomes Jr. and Gussie Mary Hearns. He was later lovingly raised by his devoted stepfather, Floyd, a prosperous businessman who owned both a gas station and multiple properties. Floyd recognized Charles’s natural aptitude for automotive mechanics and encouraged his talents from an early age. With Floyd’s mentorship and support, Charles developed into a skilled mechanic and hydraulic specialist—a hands-on gift that shaped the course of his life.
Charles was a man of deep faith, unwavering values, and a heart rooted in love for his family. He loved God wholeheartedly and lived with a spiritual conviction that inspired all who knew him. He especially cherished the Christmas season, a time filled with warmth, joy, and family traditions. Bringing happiness to his loved ones during the holidays lit up his heart and reflected the love he gave so freely year-round.
A proud graduate of Sam Houston High School in Arlington, Texas, class of 1973, Charles went on to study at the Dale Carnegie School of Business, where he further honed the charisma, confidence, and presence that made him unforgettable.
Adventurous and passionate, Charles lived life with a bold spirit—often behind the wheel of a race car. A dedicated hobbyist and award-winning drag racer, he collected trophies and earned the respect of local sponsors. He proudly owned classic cars such as a Chevy Chevelle and a Chevy Nova, and he rode his Harley-Davidson Hog with the same sense of freedom and pride that he brought to every aspect of life.
Known for his tireless work ethic and strong sense of purpose, Charles made a meaningful impact in his community and among those who knew him best. He approached life with determination, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility, always ready to lend a hand or share his wisdom.
But above all, Charles cherished his family. His greatest joy came from being a father, especially to his youngest daughter, Charlette Cam Mahomes—affectionately given a middle name inspired by his love for auto parts. She was the light of his life. Known for his infectious laughter, heartfelt wisdom, and vivid storytelling, Charles was the kind of man who could fix your engine, lift your spirits, and leave you smiling—all in a single visit.
His circle of lifelong friends—Dan, Sally, Steve, Ezel, Randy, George, and Jim—remained a constant source of strength and joy throughout the years, a reflection of his loyalty and the deep bonds he nurtured.
Charles is survived by the love of his life of 38 years, Effie Love Mahomes, who was by his side to hear his final, heartfelt words: “Hey, Girl, I love you.” He also leaves behind his beloved children: Cicely Clemons, Corey Clemons, Tasha Clemons, Teena Clemons, and Charlette Mahomes; his son-in-law, Troy Turley; daughter-in-law, Lakeiba Clemons; his sister, Carolyn Coleman, and brother-in-law, Tommie Coleman; nieces Tamika Coleman and Cortney Coleman; and nine treasured grandchildren: Brittni Clemons, Aerial Clemons, Ciara Clemons, Darren Clemons, Deandre Clemons, Kaden Haynes, Layla Clemons, Christopher Turley, and Marcus Turley. A host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends will also continue to carry his memory in their hearts.
Charles was preceded in death by his beautiful daughter, Charlette Cam Mahomes; his parents, Jim Mahomes Jr. and Gussie Mary Hearns; his brothers, Johnny Ray Mahomes and William Floyd Jr., and his beloved stepfather, William Floyd.
Charles Mahomes leaves behind a legacy of resilience, strength, and unconditional love. He taught us to live boldly, love deeply, keep the faith close, and cherish life’s sweetest moments—especially those shared with the people we hold dear. May we honor his memory by doing just that.
