The Beginnings
Augustus Raleigh “Gus” Thurman Jr. was born March 23, 1958, to the late Lottie (Sumlin) Thurman and Augustus Thurman Sr. in Gary, Indiana.
The Man:
Gus was an easy-going, jovial and strong-willed person. Gus loved to talk and share stories and good laugh. More than anything, Gus loved his wife Cheryel and his children, Christian and Alexis. In his youth, Gus was a gifted athlete and continued his love of sport his entire life. Gus graduated from Stebbins HS in Dayton, Ohio, Class of 1976. After a brief stint at Savanah State College, Gus attended Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, Texas graduating with a B.S. in Kinesiology. Gus started his career at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport in March 1987 with Police/Fire/Paramedic Services. He spent his final years of service performing police/fire candidates interviews and background checks. He retired in September 2020 after 33 years of service. Gus will be remembered for his hardy laugh, loyalty to family and friends and unflinching optimism!
The Wife:
Gus met his loving and devoted wife Cheryel Denise (Brock) Thurman in the summer of 1978 on the campus of TCU. They were married on August 11, 1984. Their union lasted over 40 years.
The Children:
On January 13, 1988, the devoted loving son, Christian was born to Gus and Cheryel. On December 31, 1991, their kind, steadfast and loving daughter, Alexis Victoria Thurman was born. A loving father, Gus took great pride in watching his children compete in sports and thoroughly enjoyed sharing stories with them over a good meal.
